Traveling Mini-Science Carnival

Hands-on science exhibit at White Flint

In undertaking this project we negotiated a contract with the Pacific Science Center for their “Traveling Mini-Science Carnival” which consisted of 19 hands-on science exhibits focusing on the physical sciences. As an in-kind contribution, Lerner Corporation provided the space at White Flint in Rockville, MD. To support our program we raised funds from Geomet Technologies, Inc., The Helena Foundation, and GEICO, as well as numerous individual supporters.

Explore-It-All developed educational literature for all teachers attending the exhibit. We hosted an open house for them prior to our opening. Our marketing was provided by White Flint, Explore-It-All’s communications volunteer and the Montgomery County Science Department.

Traveling Mini-Science CarnivalThe “Traveling Mini-Science Carnival” was opened for three months from February – May, 1999. We had 7,887 visitors: 57 percent were pre-scheduled elementary school and youth groups and 43 percent were walk-in visitors. We had 55 volunteers who donated 1,388 hour to the Center. Upon completion of this exhibition, we had met our goal of presenting an exciting science enrichment opportunity for school age children and their families.

World of Whales

Kids Traveled a Virtual Whale Watch

Explore-It-All carried out its first major outreach program in 1997, hosting Dinamation's “World of Whales” at the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration's (NOAA) Science Learning Center in Silver Spring , MD. “World of Whales” was open for three months from September 26 – December 21, 1997.

The program for school visitation included an introduction to the activities by NOAA personnel and a viewing of a whale watch expedition called “Voyage of the Mimi.” During the time spent with the whales, the students were sent on a “virtual whale watch” and given a whale watch log to engage them in their scientific expedition.

World of Whales ProgramWe had 11, 217 visitors; approximately 50 percent of which came from scheduled elementary school and group field trips. The other 50 percent constituted walk-in visitors. We enlisted the help of 53 volunteers donating a total of 626 hours of their time. At the completion of this exhibition, we met our goals of developing an informal science education program for school children and families, presenting the organization to the community, and acquiring a financial balance.
